All the Shifter Round-Ups in One Place

shifters

Throughout the year, I’ve been rounding up books with specific shifters–dragon shifters in one round-up, wolves in two others, big cats, and (coming soon) bears. It’s been a blast to see what other authors are creating and add new books to my TBR list.

To keep them all together (a round-up of round-ups, if you will), I made a single page for them here on the site.

Excerpt from Dragon Shattered, a Reverse Harem Paranormal Romance

Dragon Shattered will be out on March 21st–that’s less than a month! I just cannot wait and have to share an extra little excerpt with you now!

This is from Taylor’s point of view, when he first meets one of the other guys he’ll be working with (uh, and sharing Ariana with…but that part comes later…).

The elevator stopped on forty-six and I waited while the doors opened. They parted to reveal a giant dude heaving a couch. He looked like a poster boy for protein shakes and workout equipment. The first thing that hit me, before the leg of the couch, was his scent. Clouds and fire—he, too, was a dragon shifter.

“Hey, that couch isn’t going to fit in here,” I said.

“The hell it won’t,” he grunted.

“It’s probably too heavy for the elevator.”

He ignored me and inched the couch toward the door, holding the sliding doors back with one hand. The upholstery was harsh on the eyes. If I had to name the shade, I’d call it garbage green. And the stale scent of the thing told me the cushions were full of dust.

“You know what, I think I’ll get out here,” I said, but it was too late.

With a last grunt, he shoved the couch the rest of the way in, trapping me in place.

“Sorry,” he said, but he didn’t sound that apologetic. And then he stepped in after it.

Now we were really jammed in together.

The giant man sent me a sly grin. “Do you like men?”

“What? No,” I said. “I’m into women, sorry. Straight as an arrow.”

“Me, too,” he said, “but this would make a good meet cute on one of my mama’s old romance flicks.”

I couldn’t help my laugh. “Do you work here?”

“Not yet, but I hope to,” he said. “I’m interviewing for the partner position.”

I shook his hand. “Taylor Stonehall. I’m interviewing for the same one.”

He gave me a look before taking my hand in a shake. “Slade Rouland. Why don’t I hate you on sight?”

“No idea,” I said. Inside I was thinking that maybe, subconsciously, he could tell that I didn’t really want his job. But that couldn’t be it. How could he figure that one out from thirty seconds of conversation? “If you don’t work here—yet,” I said, “how come you’re dragging around a couch?”

“Maintenance guy told me I could snag it for our living room.”

“Reasonable enough,” I said.

The elevator dinged for the forty-eighth floor, and the doors opened. Slade stepped out and tugged on the couch. I pushed it from my end, then had to dive back for my duffel before the doors closed again. I shoved the duffel out in front of me, and Hafiz’s book of poetry tumbled out of the unzipped pocket.

“Hafiz?” Rouland asked.

“Yeah.”

“Isn’t that love poetry or some shit?”

“Yeah.” I stood up straight, waiting for the inevitable conclusions people drew.

He frowned. “What are you, Romeo?”

“Hardly.” I thought of the beautiful Mrs. Ariana West and how I had failed to charm her.

But maybe I’d work on that. I didn’t want the job, but I definitely wanted the woman.

We’ve got more Dragon Shattered to share with you as we lead up to the big release!

7 Shifter Heroes I Have Known and Loved

*This post first appeared on McKenna Dean’s blog on 9/19/17.

shifter romance covers

We all have book boyfriends, the fictional men who make our hearts beat faster and could probably convince us to step out of our warm reading chairs and join them in a more dangerous, paranormal setting. (Probably. I mean, only if I could still wear my ratty old yoga pants.) Here are seven shapeshifting hotties, in no particular order–

  1. Clayton Danvers from Bitten by Kelley Armstrong

Clay was my first shifter heartthrob, and he will always hold a special place in my heart. Despite the violent acts he does to ensure the safety of his pack and his questionable behavior toward Elena in the early stages of their relationship (which I won’t spoil just in case there are one or two PNR fans who haven’t yet read this book), I fell hard for his southern accent and his absolute devotion to his mate. In my head, he’s even hotter than the guy who plays him in the television series. Is he flawed? Very much so. But since he’s my first, I go easier on him.

  1. Matt Barns from Gray Back Bad Bear by T.S. Joyce

It’s impossible for me to talk about how much I love Matt without saying how much I love his mate, Willa. These two were absolutely perfect together, at turns vulnerable and hilarious. Willa, especially, brought some geeky levity to their relationship, and while I adore Matt on his own, I love him even more with Willa.

  1. Arik from When an Alpha Purrs by Eve Langlais

So this guy is completely vain, especially about his hair (that is, his “mane”), but…I sort of loved him for it. Sure, I also wanted to throttle him, but I liked that even though he thought so highly of himself and his mane, he was still vulnerable with his friends. His vanity was great for laughs.

  1. Alcide Herveaux from Club Dead by Charlaine Harris

Alcide…sigh. I really couldn’t care less about Bill or Eric. I wanted Sookie to end up with Alcide. Of course, a whole lot of random complications kept them apart throughout the series, but for a while there, I was Team Alcide.

  1. Lucas Hunter from Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh

Okay, I’ll be honest. I read Slave to Sensation a long time ago and I can’t remember any details about Lucas except that he was totally hot and there was tons of sexual tension. Hmm, might be due for a re-read….

  1. Derren Hudson from Spiral of Need by Suzanne Wright

If you love a good alphahole, you will love Derren. He starts off the story with all kinds of prejudice against Seers, and of course the heroine just happens to be a Seer. He’s controlling and derisive and super controlling. Something about Ally has him rethinking his prejudices, and you know what happens to a controlling man whose worldview is challenged? He’s cranky. So yes, Derren’s an alphahole. If you don’t like violent sex, this book might not be for you. (Not violent as in non-consensual or rapey, if I’m remembering correctly. Just…violent. Explosive. Demanding.)

  1. Adam Hauptman from Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

Hello, Hot Neighbor! This dude is just solid. Solidly built, and solid at heart. I don’t want to say too much and spoil later events in the series, so I’ll just say that I absolutely adore his love-hate relationship with Mercedes in Moon Called, and the way she teases him by leaving an eyesore junker car in sight of his house. Sa-woon. I love those two.

So those are my guys! Who’s your favorite shifter hero?
